“Terror on Church Street” was a big hit in the 1990s, before the days when Disney and Universal had spooky, more adult-themed entertainment options. It was open on the northwest corner of Church and Orange between 1991 and 1999.
It was an interactive, walk-through haunted house that was kept open year-long. There were numerous floors and dozens of little rooms and alleyways to explore, and always a huge line out the door and around the corner (especially around Halloween).
Alas, “Terror” closed down in 1999, and the building itself was torn down in 2003 – now there’s a “Plaza” high-rise with a theatre inside.
It was said that two children were killed inside the building during an accidental fire in the early 1990s, and guests would frequently complain to management about seeing children inside the premises (they weren’t allowed in, due to the graphic nature of the show). Management would investigate but there were no children to be found. There are also stories of a video surveillance camera catching an eerie mist that transformed into the face of a man.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing left to see at this location today – no word on whether or not the ghostly activity translated over to the new building that stands there now.

I worked here from July ’95- July “96. I have a photo taken of myself that in the cigarette smoke in our breakroom kinda looks like a laughing evil face:)
The fire wasn’t in the 1990’s. It was back in the days when it was a dept store owned by Cassius Boone.
In the image going along with the article, I can see a haze near the building that was once terror. It may just be me, because I often have ghost sightings almost everywhere I go
Worked at the theater that is there now. They had the local ghost tour come through and do an evp session. The projector came on seemingly by itself, then a bunch of people saw a man’s shadow cross the projector, in a way that is physically impossible; we checked and tried to disprove this and couldn’t.
We went there in 2000 for a vacation. We didn’t know anything about this, but had an eerie feeling about Church Street.
