Stranahan House

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Stranahan House

This house museum is rumored to be haunted by former owner Frank Stranahan, a businessman who fell upon hard times during the Great Depression and drowned himself in the nearby river. Folks say his spirit returned to his house and resides there still. His wife Ivy died much later in 1971, in an upstairs bedroom, and her ghost is said to be here as well, along with the ghost of her father, brother, and sister, and an Indian servant girl. Folks have seen apparitions and other strange occurrences, such as the fact that the bed shows an imprint where a ghost may be lying.

    1. If this is the house I think it is, I have a question about it. I was on a ghost walk with my brother, sister-in-law and my nephew. I am curious if anyone knows if there was a second floor room on the back of the house. My nephew and I were at the water side of the building while the group went ahead of us toward the rear. As we slowly walked toward them, I looked up toward the back of the house and saw a room with what appeared to be a woman in a rocking chair and another standing behind her. I mentioned it to my nephew and he saw the same thing. We actually stood there looking for quite a few minutes until we heard our group start to move away. We glanced toward the group and when we looked back at the house, the room and the women were no longer there. I just wonder if anyone else has had the same experience or if there really was such a room at anytime in the past.

      • I visited the Stranahan house 8-ish years ago with my family and one of the only things i remember is seeing a woman in a rocking chair. I looked up a picture of Ivy Stranahan and she bears a resemblance to what i remember the woman looking like

    2. I was visiting the Stranahan house one afternoon with my mother as I have always loved historic buildings. I also have a fascination with ghosts and the “afterlife” as well, so when I heard the rumors that the Stranahan house was reported to be haunted, I could not control myself and just had to go check it out. I arrived a little after 1 pm with my mother. We were the only 2 people on the tour and I was elated to have the undivided attention of our tour guide. We had just entered the house right after the tour guide had mentioned that Frank Stranahan had drowned himself in the river behind the house. That’s when my right shoulder started feeling like it was on fire. It was as if someone had smacked me with tremendous force. I just stood there in agony trying not to let the tour guide or my mother notice my obvious discomfort. It was all I could do not to scream in pain at the sheer agony I was feeling. After about 5 minutes, the pain went away and I never experienced anything else out of the ordinary. We finished the tour and left, me still not having said a word about my encounter. We got home and I told my mother about what had happened and she said, “That’s funny you said that, because I swear I saw something out of the corner of my eye in one of the bedrooms upstairs, but when I turned to look, nothing was there”. It really freaked me out. It was definitely an experience I will never forget.

    3. I took a ghost tour here some years back with a friend. She and I were very much interested in the paranormal, but skeptical. During the portion where you stand at the site of Stranahan’s suicide, I felt a pull toward the water. Then when we were inside the brother’s room (who supposedly doesn’t like men) we saw a depression on the bed as if someone sat down form while we were in the room. Our male tour guide elected to step outside to see if anything further would happen if he wasn’t there and I felt a distinct hand brush across my lower back. My friend said she felt a hand on her arm. The gift shop area also gave me seriously bad vibes, it’s believed the spirit of a young girl who ran into the building when it was a general store likes to hang out in that area.

    4. It should be noted that Frank Stranahan’s wife Ivy is connected to the Cromartie House as she was originally Ms Ivy Julia Cromartie & the very first school teacher of Fort Lauderdale (a replica of the schoolhouse is located behind the Cromartie House). Ivy only taught for 1 yr before becoming Mrs Stranahan (as per the law of the day, a female could no longer teach once she married). Ivy resided in her husbands home until her death in 1971. As per an agreement there was a restaurant operating on the main level of the house & she lived on the upper level.
